One of the main natural hazards that are most dangerous to the country of Mexico are earthquakes. Earthquakes are frequent and are a great deal of danger to structures. The entire state is located in a high seismic zone prone to earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions and tropical storms. However, although all hazards can be very dangerous, earthquakes are the most frequent and can lead to tsunamic activity and continue increasing any damage.
In an effort to relieve some of the impact of the country's geological hazard and address safety, I would primarily focus on earthquake relief. I chose to begin my focus on earthquakes because even though there are also other hazards, earthquakes are frequent and most often impact people the most. Just in the last few months, Mexico has experienced a few massive earthquakes measuring magnitudes of 7.6 and 6.8 that really shook large regions of the country causing buildings to collapse leading to several injuries.
Currently, Mexico does have earthquake alert systems but we know that an earthquake can be triggered in an instant. To make things safer, I would start by establishing regulations on buildings and adding escape routes for each building. The updates that would need to happen for each building would come with a specific grant allowance to fulfill these tasks. Doing this would require a larger workforce so I would invest in federally funded education programs to certify people to specialize in these building renovations. Doing so would provide more education and safety to the country to improve all-around living conditions from being able to live in a safer structure to be able to bring in stable income to families.
Most of Mexico sits atop the North American Plate but is also impacted by the Cocos Plate, and Pacific Plate (the three LARGEST tectonic plates). Mexico also touches the much smaller Caribbean Plate, the Pacific Plate, The Rivera Plate, and the Orozco Plate. I would begin my efforts at each fault line beginning with the most active fault lines.
I would construct my house anywhere I wanted to knowing what the area is prone to such hazards. Ideally, I would build a house in the coastal town of Melaque Jalisco. I would hire experts in building structures in earthquake-prone areas and build an emergency shelter/safe room in the event there’s a tsunami following the earthquake.
